|
Dear Colleague,
Welcome to the First NYSJA E-Newsletter!
We are very excited to launch our first E-Newsletter in our Centennial
Year.
Plans are underway for NYSJA's Centennial Celebration - please Save the
Date of July 25, 2009 for this momentous event. We have hired the services of OUTHOUSE PR for
pre and post publicity for the event. In addition, proceeds from the silent and
live auctions will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project, which is an association that is dedicated to assisting the
veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to overcome debilitating injuries and
to adjust to civilian life. Johnny Damon from the Yankees will be present at the event
to accept NYSJA's donation. A historical video will be also produced and
is currently in the planning stages. The video will highlight the last 100 years
of the organization and the jewelry industry. If you have any old photos of
jewelry, your store, or previous NYSJA events, please forward them to the NYSJA
office. Please visit the website, www.newyorkjewelers.org for outstanding sponsorship and
advertising opportunities and further information about this huge milestone
event for NYSJA. All Sponsors will be mentioned in the video and listed on the
website and in the Awards Journal. Please do not hesitate to call the
NYSJA office for any suggestions regarding the Centennial. We welcome your
ideas! NYSJA Office

Petition opposing
a Proposed New York State Luxury SALES TAX on Watches and Jewelry
We, the members of New York State Jewelers Association, urge the State of New
York to delete from budget legislation proposals for a luxury tax on watches and
jewelry. The U.S. Congress in the past enacted and then repealed excise taxes
on luxury goods such as jewelry and watches, taxes which proved to be utter
failures-complex to administer, raising virtually no revenue, and harming U.S.
workers, but having little effect on the rich. New York State should not repeat
these mistakes and harm an important New York-based industry already reeling
from the deepening recession. (Click Here to Read the Full Petition - Please print
and use in your store.)

Violent
crimes rising - don't be a victim Jewelers Mutual Insurance
During this economic downturn, Jewelers Mutual is seeing an alarming trend of
violent crimes against jewelry retail owners and salespersons. Never before has
it been more crucial to practice safety measures and be prepared for incidents
of burglary and robbery. You are a target Combining the fact that jewelers remain favorite
targets for burglaries and robberies, with the poor economy and rising
desperation, the risk to jewelers appears to be escalating based on the number
of claims insurers are seeing. Violent crimes, such as this one
reported by Jewelers' Security Alliance (JSA), also are becoming more common: (Click Here to Read the Full article)

How to
improve your Trunk Show Results.
Melinda Cenatus
Whether you are promoting or introducing a specific jewelry
designer, product event or
want brand-loyal customers back in the store to add to their jewelry
collections, trunk
shows offer a specific reason to generate store traffic and
sales. Shane Crocker, owner of Crocker's Jewelers in Texarkana, TX, has
refined his approach to
trunk shows regarding specific jewelry brands after years of marketing
them. "In the past, I used to send trunk show announcements to my entire
customer list , but found that the customers that came to the specific trunk
show were customers that bought the line before. Now, if I am doing a Pandora
Trunk Show, I will target customers that have made a previous Pandora purchase.
